July has been a very busy month for Formula Ford racing.

VICTORIAN STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS-SANDOWN RACEWAY

My first round of racing for the month was at Round 3 of the Victorian State Championships held at Sandown Raceway on the 21st and 22nd of July.

With changing conditions all throughout practice on Friday, we arrived to a wet track for qualifying on Saturday morning. I managed to qualify 2nd fastest and started Race 1 on the front row.

The rain started to fall as we sat on the start grid making conditions very slippery. I got a great start while the other drivers were struggling with wheel spin and had a great lead by the time the hail started to fall, bringing out the safety car until the conditions settled and they had retrieved a car left stranded on the track.

I maintained the lead from the restart and extend my lead to six seconds and maintaining that lead for the rest of the race. I was really happy to have brought home the win for the 1st race of the weekend and momentum was in my favour.

Conditions on Sunday were dry which made the racing very different. Starting from the front row there was close racing for the entire race, with the front three cars swapping positions constantly. In a last lap dash to the line we were three wide at the top corner and running wheel to wheel, but in the final battle to the line I came out in 3rd place for Race 2.

A post-race penalty for not wearing fireproof socks saw me relegated 5 grid places to start in 8th for the final race, a bit of a challenge!!

Charging from the back in Race 3 I got a good start and managed to be in 4th position by lap 3. My car had great pace and we were swapping positions lap by lap throughout the race, making it as high as 2nd place before another last corner stoush saw me crossing the line in 4th.

A 3rd place for the weekend and maintained 3rd place in the championship as well. Great results and experience gained for the weekend and some valuable points for the Victorian Championship in the bag.

In a quick turnaround, the team only had a couple of days to prep the car and head to Queensland for the 3rd Round of the Australian National Formula Ford Championship.

SHANNONS NATIONALS FORMULA FORD CHAMPIONSHIP-QUEENSLAND RACEWAY

How great it was to be in sunny Queensland!

With the weather being warm it proved a challenge for us coming from the cold, wet and on occasion hailing conditions of the weekend before.

I really enjoyed the circuit and even though I had never been to the track before Friday I managed to put in the 3rd fastest times through practice. Following that up by qualifying in 3rd place on Saturday morning, putting me on the second row of the grid for the first race.

Race 1 was spent predominately behind the safety car, after several other cars were involved in first lap accidents, with it only exiting the track for the last few laps.

This ensured massively close 5 car battles for the front positions in which I was able to come across the line 5th.

I started out of grid 5 for race 2, which was again under safety car for a few laps, unfornately for me the race  was spoiled by a gearbox drama that saw me  roll to a stop after the safety car restart and gave me first ever DNF in a race meeting since the Formula Ford Journey began.

This meant no valuable points for the race, a lot of work for me and my pit crew to get the car repaired in time for Race 3, and also booked us a rear of grid starting position.

For the second consecutive week I was left to charge from the rear of the grid in the final race of the meeting.

The race started well and  I was able to pick off a couple of back markers on lap one, it was an awesome race with no safety cars to interfere with our run, I really enjoyed working my  way through the field, my car had great pace and before long I was fighting my way up to podium contention. I gained second place in the closing laps of the race and after a tough fight to retain the position I had to settle for 3rd position.

With the top 5 rankings in the series being so close in points the gearbox issue and loss of points for that race has seen me drop to 5th in the Australian Championship standings.

We have another fairly short turn around to get the car ready for the next National Round that will be held at Wakefield Park, Goulburn NSW on the 20&21 August.

I am looking forward to getting back in the car and hopefully reclaim some more points in the series and be back in the game.

My video footage of race 3 is on my you tube link on my Facebook page Jordan Boys Official , and the official television coverage of the Formula Ford race can be seen on www.thenationals.com.au the    Shannon’s National online TV coverage or will be on Speedweek SBS on Sunday 21st August at 2.00pm .

It would be great if you could take a look.

All the best,

Jordan
