The Supercar that nearly was... Penrite Blog Post

In Anticipation of the upcoming Retro Supercar Championship round at Wilson Security Sandown 500 16th – 18th September
The Penrite Erebus motorsport team have been coming up with some special retro concepts for David Reynolds #9 Erebus Motorsport car

This livery concept was modelled off the in-Famous touring car driver ‘Captain’ Peter Janson from the 1970’s and 1980’s

While the ‘Captain’ was well known for listing his occupation as ‘Gentleman’. He had quite a lasting impression on the landscape of Australian motorsport back in the day. With his impromptu Janson parade laps, candid live TV interviews and sponsor activations.

The Captain is best known for his actions during the 1977 Sandown race,  with Peter Janson and co-driver Larry Perkins entering their A9X Torana into the race the Captain had promised a sponsor a full windscreen banner, something illegal by CAMS at the time, along with a warning and promise on Saturday to remove the offending banner.

On the following race day Cams CEO John Keeffe and other scrutineers were presented with an official looking letter on government letterhead now recognising the Peter Janson name to be that of the sponsor.

Little did they know, the captain and members of his team had spent the night before with an old type writer and some official letterhead creating the documents.
The CAMS scrutineers had no option but to allow the offending windscreen banner and making Captain Pete Janson the 1st Australian driver to run advertising across his windscreen.

2016 will be the 47th time Sandown Raceway will host an Australian Touring Car/Supercars event – the most of any venue.

Supercars will be celebrating this by promoting the 2016 Wilson Security Sandown 500 as a ‘Retro Round’, with a view to bringing back the look and feel of the touring car eras of the 60s, 70s and 80s.

Supercars teams and sponsors are supporting this initiative through activating historic car liveries, retro team uniforms and one-off merchandising opportunities. Make sure to come down and check it all out!
